About Kochi

Nicknamed the Queen of the Arabian Sea, Kochi, aka. Cochin, is a major port city and has been an important spice trading center along the Malabar Coast since antiquity. Today, Kochi is also described as the financial, commercial and industrial capital of Kerala.

Kochi's rich cultural heritage has made it a popular tourist destination among both domestic and international travellers. The port of Muziris traded with the Romans, Persians, Arabs, and Chinese. The Portuguese established Fort Kochi (Fort Emmanuel) in 1503. The Dutch took the fort in 1663 and then ceded the area to the United Kingdom. Kochi remained under the control of the Kingdom of Cochin, which became a princely state of the British. In 1947, when India gained independence from the British colonial rule, Cochin was the first princely state to join India willingly.
